The Nokia PC Phone is a service that gives you a possibility to use your Nokia mobile phone with your PC Web Browser. You can call, text and manage contacts from your phone. You can also see incoming text messages as popups and you can answer to calls.
The Nokia PC phone is a browser extension/plug-in and it works with Firefox 2.x or Internet Explorer 7.x browsers.
You are welcome to use the Nokia PC Phone service in your daily mobile communication. Use it while at work - send your SMS's from your PC qwerty keyboard. Find out who said what and when from your past SMS logs. Make calls with a simple mouse click. You can even make a call or send a text message when browsing a website that contains phone numbers; also you can store the number to your phone contacts!
What is the difference between the Nokia PC Suite and Nokia PC Phone ? Do I need both ? Does the Nokia PC Phone work without the Nokia PC Suite ?
We have wanted to focus more on the communication functions, whilst PC suite provides a broad range of applications to manage the Nokia phone.
The target for the design is that you don’t need to have a PC-suite installed. However in our tests the software works better if the PC-suite is installed with some OS/connectivity/phone combinations. You can also try to use it without and see if it works. Feedback is much appreciated
Why is the Nokia PC Phone a browser and system tray application instead of a small browser plug-in?
We thought about this and decided to include a system tray application too. The reason was that we wanted to create a new communication experience to those of us who use PC’s and a phone at the same time. We wanted to make it possible for the user to respond fast to incoming SMS’s and calls regardless of the state the user is in. A browser only approach wouldn’t have made this possible. You wouldn’t get a notification if you were using some other application than the browser.

Why is the Nokia PC Phone a browser plug-in instead of just a small native application?
We thought between a native application and a browser based approach too. The beauty of a browser based approach is that it will be always on on people’s PC’s. You need to launch a dedicated client, but you can be pretty sure that your Web browser is always on. That’s why we preferred to go for the browser plug-in. Also, the Nokia PC Phone lets you to make calls from any Web site. Check that out! When you browse in the Web, you can always switch to use your Nokia phone. This wouldn’t have been possible with a small native app. What do you think? Please let us know at http://www.nokia.com/betalabs/pcphone/feedback.

What is the difference between the Mobile Web server and Nokia PC Phone?
Mobile web server is in the phone. This is not. We try to minimize installations to the mobile phone as that is easier to the greater public. Also, all traffic between the browser and phone is over a local free of charge bearer. The Mobile Web Server relies on 3G packet data.

Simply connect your Nokia phone to your PC, select a friend from the contact list and click the call icon.
Your phone will call your friend and you can use your mobile phone to talk.
Sending an SMS is very easy. When you open the Nokia PC Phone, you will find it opens in the SMS feature by default. Select your friend into the To-field from your contacts, or type the mobile phone number into the field, if you don't have it stored in your contacts. Type the SMS body text and send away the message.
You'll find all the information in the service that you need.
You will notice that the browser underlines phone numbers on screen and when you move mouse over the number it will be highlighted. Clik it to make a call make the call. Your phone will call the number and you can use your mobile phone to talk … just remember to pick up your phone!
You will enjoy most click-to-call, when you use a headset or earpiece. The calls will be immediately available to you.
The same changes will be copied to the mobile phone too when the phone is connected.
The deleted SMS will be deleted from the mobile phone too. You have also an option to delete the SMS from your phone only or PC only. The SMS is deleted from the phone when the phone is connected.

No. You can only access your Nokia phone from your PC where you installed the Nokia PC Phone software.
No they are not. Your contacts, call and SMS log is stored on the PC that you use.
If you consider accessing your contacts, call logs and SMS logs is important from any web browser, please send us feedback at http://www.nokia.com/betalabs/pcphone/feedback. We are happy to include stuff that matter on our roadmaps.
Yes you can. When connected, the Nokia PC Phone downloads SMS's from your mobile phone and stores them on the PC. They will stay there in an archive even if you delete the messages from the mobile phone.
A perpetual SMS archive is fantastic for many things! Store the SMS's related to work, personal hobby or those precious messages with your significant other. You can always check them out later with the Nokia PC Phone.
We will be developing the SMS logs functions, output formats, search and other useful services. Please let us know (at http://www.nokia.com/betalabs/pcphone/feedback) what you would like to get. We want to develop stuff that make sense to you!
Yes you can. When connected, the Nokia PC Phone downloads the call log history from your mobile phone and stores them on the PC. They will stay there in an archive even if the call log entry is deleted from the mobile phone.
Select a friend from the list and select send SMS to him/her.
Or, select send SMS and select your friend to the To field of the message.
In both cases, you can then type a message and fire it away! Obviously, the message editor supports all UI routines available in a Web browser and Windows environment, including copy and paste from and to other applications.
This is the novelty of the Nokia PC Phone software. You can remain concentrated in your work on the PC and take or reject calls without losing sight from your screen. You can take the call, after which you need to pick up the phone and use it as normal. If you are using a headset or earpiece, the call will be connected directly to it and you can start talking immediately. Fantastic!
If you don't want to take the call, you can disconnect it and reply immediately with an SMS to your friend. Simply type the SMS in the field visible in the prompt.
Same goes for SMS's. You will see an incoming message prompt on you PC. Nokia PC Phone helps you to be fast and friendly when you work with your PC.
Tip : put your mobile on silent when in meeting. You will see all incoming call and SMS prompts on your laptop. You will be able to respond to them discretely.
Yes you can. You can add data to your contacts, edit and delete them. Not all contact details can be managed with Nokia PC Phone but the most important you can.
The same changes will be applied to the mobile phone too when the phone is connected.
They are on your PC (as files) and phone. You will find them in your personal folder (C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\Application Data\Nokia\PC Phone).
If you have not given permissions for other users of your PC they are strictly your private files and cannot be used or seen by others. Your PC Phone can be used as a SMS and call log archive. You can safely delete SMS messages or call log from your phone and they are still visible in Nokia PC Phone.
The data is stored on your PC as files. You will find them in your personal folder (C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\Application Data\Nokia\PC Phone). Take a backup copy of this directory to an alternate media if you need a backup.
If you have made a backup, you are lucky. Install Nokia PC Phone to your new PC and connect your phone. Copy the backup files from your alternate media to (C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\Application Data\Nokia\PC Phone) before launching Nokia PC Phone.

Not all phones support all the details seen in Nokia PC Phone. Some phones support only 'street address' of all the address details - in that case just type the whole address to the 'street address' as one long string.

The Nokia PC Phone is caching data when connecting (SMS’s Addresses etc). This takes a long time –how to make it faster?
The Nokia PC Phone caches all the information from your phone. This may take several minutes if you have a long history of SMS’s. We try to find a solution to make the next synchronizations faster after the initial first connection.
The selecting contacts UI in the Send SMS pane does not work properly, why?
The contact selection drop down menu in the Send SMS and call was one of the last features implemented. This misbehavior will be fixed in our next release.

Why is the connection and data transfer speed so slow? Could it be faster?
The connection speed for the data transfer is limited by the local connectivity and the output of the phone in use. It may take several minutes to transfer a long history of SMS’s to the Nokia PC Phone. We will find a solution to make the subsequent synchronizations faster and limit it only to the most recent ones. If the phone is connected to the Nokia PC Phone when you receive a new SMS, then you will notice that there is an only minimal latency.
I am experiencing problems with placing calls and incoming pop-up alerts – what may be the reason?
The Nokia PC Phone has a pop-up for incoming SMS’s and calls. You can also place calls from the Nokia PC Phone. There is some variation in the Nokia phones in this regard and you can experience problems. Especially S60 terminals using Bluetooth connectivity are not supported. Try to use a cable instead.

The UI has defects: how contact and their contents appear, sorting etc.
We know that there may be some inconsistencies in the UI and how contacts, phone numbers and addresses appear on the Nokia PC Phone. Special characters may cause some troubles. The reason for this is that the data structures in the phones vary to quite an extent. We are working on the issue and trying to get it fixed.

Will Infrared connectivity be supported?
We have intentionally removed Infrared support. The usability of an infrared link in daily usage will not be too great. You would end up aligning the phone with the PC. Hence, we didn’t consider it worth implementing.

The Nokia PC Phone uses your Nokia phone to send text messages and to call. Your phone bill will be charged for the mobile communication services that you will actually use. Contact your mobile operator if you are not sure what your phone usage costs are.

Wrong numbers are identified as phone numbers ( post codes, bank account numbers ) on a Web page
The plug-in identifies numeric strings and parses them according to a set of known phone number representation styles. E.g. a string of seven consecutive numbers is likely to be a phone number. A number starting with an international prefix +358 (9) 12345678 is likely to be phone number. However, large numbers or account numbers look alike. If you consider this annoying, you can turn it off on the top right hand corner of your Web browser from the menu selection of the Nokia PC Phone toolbar menu.
Can I get my contact data on a Nokia Web site instead of my own PC?
It is clear that this can evolve towards a Web service to store your contacts, SMS’s and other phone content. If you are keen to use it, please let us know at http://www.nokia.com/betalabs/pcphone/feedback.
Can you support other browsers : Opera or Safari?
Browser extensions require always some browser specific work. We have had only a limited amount of time and funds to create this. That’s why we have prioritized Firefox and IE7. Cannot tell if we will support Opera.

Can I use the PC speakers and mic?

Could the Nokia PC Phone be available on Mac or Linux?
The local connectivity libraries from a computer to the mobile phone are only available for Windows. There is no Mac or Linux support. To create the connectivity is not a trivial task either, and we don’t currently plan to support other operating systems, so sorry. We are Mac users ourselves, so we feel the pain, but cannot help it for the time being.
